Her system does not appear to accept Chinese characters so, here&#8217;s the complete post:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I looked for the character in Shuessler&#8217;s &#8220;Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese&#8221; and, all context aside, I find interesting that \u7ff0-han, in Zhou times, perhaps all the way to Han times, meant &#8220;to support (figuratively).&#8221; He then cross-references the word to \u5e79-gan, &#8220;stem, framework, skeleton; posts in a framework.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I suppose the bird associated meaning should be blamed to the Book of Rites: (1).\u300a\u793c\u8bb0\u00b7\u66f2\u793c\u4e0b\u300b\uff1a\u201c\u51e1\u796d\u5b97\u5e99\u4e4b\u793c\u2026\u2026\u7f8a\u66f0\u67d4\u6bdb\uff0c\u9e21\u66f0\u7ff0\u97f3\u3002\u201d\u540e\u56e0\u4ee5\u201c\u7ff0\u97f3\u201d\u4e3a\u9e21\u7684\u4ee3\u79f0\u3002\u300a\u6587\u9009\u00b7\u5f20\u534f\uff1c\u4e03\u547d\uff1e\u300b\uff1a\u201c\u5c01\u718a\u4e4b\u8e6f\uff0c\u7ff0\u97f3\u4e4b\u8dd6\u3002\u201d \u5415\u5ef6\u6d4e \u6ce8\uff1a\u201c\u7ff0\u97f3\uff0c\u9e21\u4e5f\u3002\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3h29xa6\">http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3h29xa6<\/a>) Perhaps the result of being paired with \u97f3 (a character that does not appear in Schuessler&#8217;s&#8211;and makes me wonder about it&#8217;s ancient use as such&#8211;but \u5591-an does, literally meaning &#8220;words kept in mouth&#8221; (silence, muteness, etc.)) and all those feathers influencing the context to create an image of a &#8220;chanticleer,&#8221; to use Legge&#8217;s poetic rendition. Makes me think that the meaning of \u7ff0\u97f3 seems to be more like an onomatopoeia, or at least something that evokes the sound of wings being flapped. Just a thought but, perhaps, \u7ff0\u97f3\u767b could carry a meaning of &#8220;wings being flapped in crescendo&#8221;&#8230; (a sound of distress and alarm that ties with Steve&#8217;s first comment above)<\/p>\n<p>To obscure things a bit more, current use of \u7ff0 translates to &#8220;writing brush; writing; pen&#8221; (\u7ff0\u6797 meaning &#8220;academics&#8221; from at least Tang times).
